Today, I will be showing you how to set up your web domain. Please choose a domain option and sign up or purchase your domain by today. This will allow you to follow along and set it up as I show you what to do. We will conclude class by experimenting with your domain, and you can ask me any questions you have.
Note: You do not need to put your name on your domain. When thinking about what to name your website, you could name it something related to the class, but you could alternatively name it something that represents you more broadly (your name, something you like, a characteristic about yourself, etc.).
You can either purchase a domain or use the free version of WordPress. If you purchase a domain, it does not matter which server you use; however, it is crucial that the server you use allows you to install WordPress on your website. This is because WordPress is the platform I will be teaching you to use.
There are a couple benefits to purchasing a domain, rather than using free WordPress:
- The free version of WordPress does not give you access to as many plugins. While plugins are not necessary, I will show you a bit about the cool features they can add to your site, along with how they can sometimes simplify the website building process.
- The free version of WordPress will add “.wordpress.com” at the end of your domain name. If you want your own name without this, you should purchase your own.
- The free version of WordPress will not allow you to create subdomains from your main domain.
Should you decide to purchase a domain, here are a few options:
- WordPress.com gives you an annual rate or a monthly rate to purchase your domain.
- ReclaimHosting.com is the server that I use for my domains, so I can give you plenty of support with this domain option.
- GoDaddy.com is another well-known server that allows you to install WordPress.
